North Brookfield receives stimulus grant: Foyle reconsiders NBDDC resignation

NORTH BROOKFIELD - The Board of Selectmen has announced that former Selectman James Foyle has agreed to remain on the board he instigated more than five years ago - the North Brookfield Downtown Development Committee. "We're delighted that he's agreed to stay with NBDDC, and are sending him a letter confirming our mutual and separate appreciation for his dedication and support for him in this valuable endeavor," Selectman Mary Walter said.
She also reported the awarding of a $200,000 Recovery Act grant by the federal government, this for the cleanup of Brownfields at South Common Street. Foyle has spearheaded the cleanup effort for the former Aztec Asbestos site, and has also been active in working with state and federal officials to obtain funding for the huge undertaking. "I'd love to see some more money coming from the government for this project," he said at his last meeting as a selectman. "I'm sure Sen. Brewer and Lt. Gov.Murray don't love to receive my emails, but I'll keep sending them. North Brookfield is a little town, and I want them to remember who we are and that
we're here."
This is the third, and possibly final, grant for the cleanup of the property, which includes three separate parcels comprising the 5.3 acre tract.
Construction of the $3.1 million police station to be erected on the Grove and School streets corner of the property will begin next month, Police Chief Aram
Thomasian said.
Town officials are currently negotiating with Quabaug Corporation to lease the remainder of the property for parking and warehouse use.
