Fall Fitness Hikes

We will burn off calories while observing the natural world's adaptations to shorter days and cooler temperatures. The forests and meadows are alive with migrating birds frantically feeding on ripening berries, while summer's last blooms attract monarchs on their southern journey.  Bring water and dress in layers. The ABC's of Fungi at Burncoat Pond Wildlife Sanctuary

Description: Fungi are extensive organisms that course invisibly through forest soils and dead wood and are essential to forest ecology. Fungal fruiting bodies take on many forms, both familiar and fantastic, with diverse colors, textures, shapes, and fragrances. Our program is for beginners and will include a review of field guides and identifiction tips as well.

 

NOTE: Program does not cover edibility or collection of mushrooms. Those interested in fungi for food should contact the Boston Mycological Club.  Meet at the end of Polar Spring Road, Route 9 (watch for Leicester/Spencer sign; dirt road is adjacent to entrance for Spencer Country Inn. Fall Foliage Paddle on the Blackstone in Uxbridge

Description: We'll put in at the Tri-River Family Health Center in Uxbridge and paddle upstream into the Blackstone Canal and Rice City Pond, where wildlife abounds! Learn about the Blackstone River watershed, the wildlife that live there, and how they depend on clean water. This program is part of the Campaign for a Fishable/Swimmable Blackstone River by 2015 series. Swimming ability required.  Meet at Tri-RiverFamily Health Center, 281 E. Hartford Avenue, Uxbridge. Exploring Burncoat Pond by Canoe

Description: Discover the seasonal progression of aquatic plant and animal life as they prepare for the cold winter months at this calm pond. Search for aquatic plants, pileated woodpeckers, and signs of recent otter activity. View the woodland edges of the many acres of Mass Audubon property at this pristine location.Bring lunch along since we will stop for a brief stretch.  Meeting location is Leicester's Burncoat PARK, Route 9, approximately one-quarter mile east from the entrance to Burncoat Pond Wildlife Sanctuary. Description: Weather influences our lives, every minute of every day.  In a series of hands-on investigations, we’ll explore three weather variables:  temperature, air pressure, and wind.  We’ll make our own weather instruments, use maps and graphs, and connect to other disciplines.  Budding meteorologists welcome!  Broad Meadow Brook’s homeschool programs offer a friendly, cooperative learning environment for people of all ages! Our homeschool programs are designed for the homeschooling family. Wachusett Reservoir Hike

Intro to Geology at Purgatory Chasm

Description: Join us at the geologic wonder known as Purgatory Chasm for an introduction to geology and to learn about rock types and formations. An Autumn Stroll Down Gate 33

Description: The accidental wilderness of Quabbin Reservoir has become an incredible reserve for wildlife and their habitats. Join us as we take a leisurely stroll through Gate 33 into an area filled with colorful wetlands, forest, Bassett Pond, and the great Quabbin itself. We'll do a little birding, check out a few plants, look for wildlife clues, visit an abandoned cemetery taken over by porcupines, and enjoy the scenery on what we hope will be a pleasant fall day.  Participants can either leave Broad Meadow Brook by sanctuary van at 7:45 am, or meet the group at Gate 33 in New Salem (right off Route 122) at 9:00 am. Up the Blackstone with Mass Audubon: A Three-Part Series of Van Tours - The Mid-Reach Tributaries (Part 2)

Description: The Mumford, West, and Mill rivers, all major tributaries in the mid-reach of the Blackstone River watershed, flow through Douglas, Sutton, Northbridge, Upton, Uxbridge, Hopedale, and Mendon. As we explore them by van, we'll learn about habitats, land uses, water quality, and restoration opportunities. Our industrial past will come alive through these historic landscapes. Originating as a series of streams in the hills of Worcester, the Blackstone River flows 46 miles south into Rhode Island, dropping 438 feet before emptying into the Seekonk River in Pawtucket and on to Narragansett Bay near Providence. Come explore the valley with us in Mass Audubon's van and learn about its natural, historic, and cultural resources. This season we'll start with the Rhode Island reach and work our way upriver! Meet at Broad Meadow Brook; refreshments and restrooms will be provided. There are  a limited number of seats in the van - please register early!
