    Tracking Mammals East of Worcester

    Description: Come explore the wilds of Westborough as we search for animal tracks and signs at the  Wildlife Management Area at Mass Wildlife's Headquarters.  If there's enough snow, you're welcome to bring snowshoes for an afternoon of family fun!  Free to members of Westborough Community Land Trust,.     Basics of Winter Gull Identification

    Fee: $10 Mass Audubon Adult Members, $12 Adult Non-members

    Description: The field identification of gulls presents some of the toughest challenges a birder can face. This workshop will focus on some of the basics of gull identification, review resources on gull Ids and look at some of the more interesting species that show up along the Massachusetts coast in the winter. The Saturday field trip will visit Cape Ann, a winter gull mecca for birders all over the Northeast. This class is for any serious birder wishing to review gulls.  Students should have good binoculars (8x40) and a spotting scope. Bring your field guide and a notebook to class.     Nature Adventures for 5's & 6's

Each month we’ll focus on a new nature topic.  We’ll explore our topic indoors -- with investigations, crafts, and activities – and outdoors in Broad Meadow Brook’s beautiful 400-acre wildlife sanctuary.     Description: Join us on the second Saturday of the month for wildlife-related volunteering activities. Maintaining habitat and monitoring populations are part of managing the largest urban wildlife sanctuary in New England.     Snowshoeing For Families

    Description: If you can walk, you can snowshoe! We'll teach you how to use snowshoes and practice in our field before heading out onto the trails. We will teach you how to look for signs of wildlife as we enjoy the beauty of the sanctuary in winter! If Mother Nature does not provide us with enough snow, we will go for a hike.  Please wear boots and other clothing appropriate for winter. Hot chocolate and coffee will be available Price includes snowshoe rental.     Homeschool Programs at Broad Meadow Brook:  Barking Up Trees

    Description: Get up close and personal with “the skins” of trees. We’ll discover some of the fabulous properties of bark and make some unusual “bark art.”  For ages 5 to 13.  Broad Meadow Brook’s homeschool programs offer a friendly, cooperative learning environment for people of all ages! Our homeschool programs are designed for the homeschooling family.  Parents are encouraged to attend with the student(s), but students may stay on their own if a medical form is on file with the sanctuary. At the end of all programs, students will receive follow-up information and activities so the learning can continue at home.     Snowshoeing and Winter Tracking at Burncoat Pond

    Description: Burncoat Pond Wildlife Sanctuary has some wonderful open spaces perfect for using snowshoes to explore the habitats of its many animal residents. We’ll have animal pelts on hand to enhance identification of our findings. If there's no snow we will explore the newly updated woodland trails for seasonal wonders. Bring your own snowshoes and receive $2 per person off  when you register for the program. Meet at the end of Polar Spring Road, just before the gate. Located off Route 9 at the Leicester/Spencer Line, Polar Spring is the dirt road adjacent to the Spencer Country Inn.     Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Winter

    Description: While spending a winter day at the shore may not be for everyone, Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best places in southern New England to see harlequin ducks. In addition, common eiders, black and white-winged scoters, northern harriers, buffleheads, and long-tailed ducks are commonly observed just offshore. This will not be a high-powered birding trip but a winter day at the shore with birding just one of the natural history activities we’ll indulge in!  Limited to nine participants; van transportation from Broad Meadow Brook provided. Dress warmly, bring a bag lunch, and be ready to leave at 9:00 am sharp from Broad Meadow Brook Wildlife Sanctuary.
